Proposal (take 2)

I propose to solve the following live or competition brief:

- The Hookworms gig poster

Working with this brief will benefit my practice in these ways:

- exploring the application of my illustrations to posters with a large amount of text and information on them which is not something I have any experience in doing.
- encourage me to make something which is a little edgier and maybe darker in aesthetic to what I'm used to, this poster is aimed at an audience range a little older to maybe a little younger than me. I feel my illustrations usually appeal to mostly females around my age so it will be a challenge to adapt myself to that
- throw me back into completing a brief in a short amount of time

I will be aiming to communicate:

- the slightly off kilter, dark but spacey vibe of Hookworms music
- the theme of the kind of things you can expect from the music and other artists at the gig
- all the essential details; e.g. times, dates, prices

To and audience of:

- existing fans of the Hookworms and the other bands featured that attend the gig
- people who may be encouraged to buy tickets or attend
- collectors of band posters or band art or those interested in contemporary illustration

Changing Briefs

I've decided to change my live brief from the MAG one to Hookworms as I kept sitting down to work on the brief and having a total brain block which is really not something I experience often. I usually find that if I'm experiencing low motivation during a project then the more I push through it the more motivated I become, but during this project I've realised I'm just not interested in the subject matter. Even when I visited the gallery although some of the art is lovely I didn't find any element of it particularly inspiring.

I also realised when I started considering my initial responses for this project, I don't think my practise naturally appeals to younger, child audiences. I found it really challenging and impossible to think of any ideas or outcomes that didn't feature the nude statues or the strange modern art from the gallery which to me was the most interesting and inspiring part but possibly wouldn't appeal or be acceptable for children. It also seems unfair to me that then winner would receive £200 but then their designs would be available for MAG to use for the rest of time. It just seems like a lot of work for not a huge pay off.

I've decided to switch to the Hookworms brief as not only is it more streamline and fits perfectly into our 3 week window to complete these live briefs but is also much more of the kind of brief I can see myself completing in my personal career. Its fun, immediately excited me and I went crazy doodling thumbnails straight away. I think it suits my practise more than the other briefs do in its lightheartedness and I can see that the final outcome will most likely be something slightly funny and very decorative.

Proposal

Proposal:

I propose to solve the following live or competition brief:

- The Manchester Art Gallery Brief

Working with this brief will benefit my practice in these ways:

- pushing myself out of my comfort zone by aiming to create something for children as well as adults
- give me experience in seeing how my illustrations can be applied to a variety of products
- challenge me on working quickly on a large amount of work in a short time

I will be aiming to communicate:

- a sense of play and adventure to appeal to children and reflect the nature of the gallery
- some of the galleries best features and what you can expect from a visit there
- something interactive and dynamic that can then be cut down into smaller vignettes
To and audience of:

- children and adults visiting the gallery
- tourists and those visiting, possibly internationally
- collectors of contemporary illustration products and homewares

Goals For 504

Something I'll take forward into 504:
I'd like to keep on pushing the aesthetic that I've begun slowly honing in the last few briefs and finding new ways to make it and my personal tone of voice evident in the work in making. That includes work that I'm not just making for myself, but also in the live briefs and things that aren't what I usually would do.

How I'm going to challenge myself:
I'm going to challenge myself to be more confident and self assured with the work I make, and therefore hopefully be more excited and passionate about the final outcomes. Also to rough things up more before I make the final outcome and push myself more when it being creative with composition and layouts. Don't just always go with your first idea!!!

What do I want to accomplish during 504?:
I would like to get closer to developing a sort of basic system for how I tackle projects and briefs, at the moment when were given a new project I tend to panic about it for a while, not do any work, then realise that I'm behind and do a few rushed sketches. This means I'm always pushed for time in the end and often end up rushing my desisions and inevitably never feeling like my final outcome is as polished as it could be. It would be nice to find a way of tackling and breaking down new projects that works for me and helps me get excited about the task at hand. ALSO I'd like to start just drawing more as part of my practise.
